Merriam Webster defines an emergency as: “an unforeseen combination of circumstances or the resulting state that calls for immediate action.”
That immediate action is required from those involved and usually from support services of some kind, such as fire, medical, or police. And, the key to mobilizing support, informing them of the severity, and coordinating a response is, you guessed it, COMMUNICATION.
For that communication we usually rely on the telephone system, whether wired or wireless (cellular). However, sometimes, due to location or severity, telephone services are not available. When that happens there is a group of people with the equipment, training, and readiness ready to help – AMATEUR (HAM) RADIO OPERATORS.
On May 4, 2024 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm Exhibition Lands at the Edmonton EXPO Centre, Edmonton hosts “Get Ready in the Park” an event where emergency services and Emergency Social Services have the opportunity to let you see what they have and find out what they do.
Amateur radio will be there as well to show and tell how radio can help in an emergency with your family, community and more.
